The Chief Medical Director of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Onome Ogueh has said that the word patient is nobody’s name, anybody can be a patient. The CMD made this statement when the new Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Nwose E. Ossai paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

During the courtesy visit, Dr. Ogueh informed the Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association about his vision to make DELSUTH a world-class medical institution. Under this vision, he stated that with the Governor’s approval, plans are ongoing to acquire land for the expansion of the hospital.

Dr. Ogueh also disclosed that only in DELSUTH is the college of Health Sciences not sited in the teaching hospital. He opined that the siting of the college within the Teaching Hospital would not only enable honourary consultants in DELSUTH easily teach and train both medical students and postgraduate doctors but also to provide tertiary level specialist care. He also disclosed that the stress and risk associated with having to travel between Oghara, Warri, and Abraka would be reduced when DELSUTH houses the College of Health Sciences within its premises.

On research, Dr. Ogueh revealed that DELSUTH is forging ahead and is in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and New York University to study the process of non-invasive oxygen delivery for patients with COVID-19. The CMD also said that efforts are also being made to provide clinical services that are not available anywhere else in Delta State, such as providing pediatric Cardiothoracic surgery service and training programme, Dermatology service, and restorative dentistry. All of these services are geared toward making DELSUTH a proper Teaching Hospital that would render world-class health care to Deltans and others.

While rounding up his remarks, the CMD appealed to the NMA members, well-meaning individuals in the state to collaborate with the Management in the pursuit of this noble vision, which when realized, would put DELSUTH on par with other teaching hospitals in the world.

In response to all that the CMD has said, the NMA Chairman, Dr. Nwose E. Ossai thanked the CMD for approving his request for the courtesy call. Dr. Ossai, thanked the DELSUTH Management for generally doing well on the welfare of its members, saying that NMA is ready to partner with the management of the Teaching Hospital and the government to ensure that DELSUTH reaches the expected destination which is providing World Class Services that will satisfy the yearning of all Deltans.
